First, the easy fixes
Before you call, three things worth trying.
- The battery. On an electronic lock it's usually a 9-volt behind the keypad, which slides up or pops off; some hide inside the door with an external jump point. A fresh battery fixes half the "dead keypad" calls.
- The wrong-try timer. Most electronic locks ignore you for five to fifteen minutes after several wrong codes. Wait it out, then try slowly.
- A sticky dial. Dials want a slow, deliberate turn with the right number of full turns in each direction. Rushing is the usual problem; a loose dial ring is the other.

How we open a safe
Manipulation first: opening the lock without damage, by feel on a dial, or with the lock's own service methods on an electronic one. When that isn't possible, we drill, in one small precise spot chosen for that lock, then repair the hole and the lock so the safe is fully usable afterward. We don't cut safes open, and we don't leave you with a doorstop. On the phone, from the make and lock type, we'll say which path is likely and quote both.
Proof of ownership
We'll ask. A receipt, a photo of the safe in your house, ID at that address, or the paperwork from an estate all work. If it's an inherited safe or one that came with a home you just bought, the closing papers or a note from the listing agent is enough. It's the same reason we ask for ID at a locked door.
Combination changes
After a home purchase, a divorce, a staff change, or when you inherit a safe, change the combination. Dials take a change key and about twenty minutes; electronic locks are quicker. We test it with you before we leave and show you how to change it yourself next time, where the lock allows it.
Dial to electronic (and back)
Swapping a dial for an electronic lock is a common upgrade on an older safe, and usually a bolt-on job. One caution for the coast: cheap electronic locks on safes near the lagoons and the beach corrode inside, as salt air and the humidity of a closed closet get to the keypad contacts. We fit locks rated for it. Some people go the other way, from a failed keypad back to a dial, for a lock that never needs a battery.
Inherited and estate safes
A lot of Encinitas homes have been in one family for decades, and a safe in the closet with no combination is a normal part of settling an estate. We handle those quietly: open it, touch the contents only as far as confirming the door works, and set a new combination for the new owner. A home sold with a safe left behind and no code from the seller is the same job, and we can do it before or after you close.

Questions people ask
Will you damage my safe?
We open by manipulation whenever the lock allows it, which leaves no mark. If drilling is needed, it is one small hole in a spot chosen for that lock, and we repair the hole and the lock so the safe works afterward. We tell you before we start which it is likely to be.
Can you open it without the combination?
Yes. That is most of what we do. Dials are manipulated by feel; electronic locks have service procedures or, failing those, a precise drill point. You will need to show us the safe is yours.
How long does it take?
A battery or lockout-timer fix takes minutes. A dial manipulation takes anywhere from twenty minutes to a couple of hours depending on the lock. A drill-and-repair takes an hour or two. We give you a range on the phone from the make and the lock type.
Can you open a gun safe?
Yes, with proof of ownership. Gun safes use the same lock types as other safes, so the same methods apply.
Do you service hotel-style safes in rentals?
Yes. Guests lock them and forget the code. We open them, reset them, and set a manager override so it does not need a locksmith next time.
